A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key public works projects.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” stated the national leader.
The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose time in office finished the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his administration's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The development of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated rate, surpassing expectations to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.
