Cameroonian Opposition Leader Faces Court Action Regarding Election Unrest, Authorities Says

Election Demonstration in Cameroon
Numerous in Cameroon are furious over the fact that the president has secured an eighth presidential term

Cameroon's Minister of the Interior Paul Atanga Nji has declared that political opponent Tchiroma Bakary will be prosecuted over claims that he provoked "aggressive election protests".

A minimum of 4 demonstrators have been fatally wounded during skirmishes between law enforcement and opposition supporters since Cameroon's election on October 12, with 92-year-old President Paul Biya securing an eighth term in office.

Issa Tchiroma maintains that he won the election, a assertion dismissed by the governing party, the Cameroon People's Democratic Movement (CPDM).

Forceful measures by security personnel on protesters have alarmed the world leaders, with the UN, African Union and European Union demanding caution.

Official's Allegations

On Tuesday, the interior minister alleged the opposition figure of planning what he described as "unlawful" protests resulting in the fatalities, and also condemned him for declaring victory in the election.

He noted that Tchiroma Bakary's "associates involved in an subversive plot" will also face legal action.

Poll Figures

Cameroon's leader, who took control in 1982 and is now the oldest serving president, won the 12 October vote with 53.7% of the votes, compared to a significant minority for the challenger, according to the electoral authority.

Opposition Response

Issa Tchiroma is has not yet commented to the government's decision to try him, but he had before stated that he rejected a stolen vote - and that he was fearless of being taken into custody.

Following the vote count, he claimed that gunmen opened fire on protesters gathered near his home in the city of Garoua, fatally wounding at least two civilians.

Probe Launched

Earlier this week, the government official revealed that an probe would be started into clashes prior to and following the announcement of the poll figures.

"During these attacks, some of the criminals died," he commented, without offering a exact count of protesters who have been fatally injured in the clashes.

The minister noted that several officers of the police and military also suffered serious injuries.

Ongoing Circumstances

Even though Nji asserted the state of affairs throughout Cameroon was now under control, demonstrators remain active in some parts of the nation, especially in these two cities, where demonstrators mounted obstructions on Tuesday, and burnt tyres on the thoroughfares.

Observers caution that the post-electoral violence could plunge the nation into a political crisis.
