An ex- Royal Marine was a “man in a rage” when he mowed down scores of Liverpool football club fans during a victory parade, in what many feared was a terrorist attack, a court has heard. “The footage was profoundly upsetting.” Those injured of Paul Doyle wept as dashcam footage depicted people being thrown into the air as he accelerated into crowds while screaming: “Get out of the way!” Doyle, 54, is due to be sentenced on Tuesday after pleading guilty on the first day of his trial last month to 31 offences involving 29 victims, including eight minors. ‘Consumed by Anger’ The prosecution stated the court that the footage from Doyle’s large people carrier proved to be “extremely graphic”. The recording revealed the father of three yelling “expletives” as well as “fucking move” while he headed straight for a large crowd of supporters, some pulling children out of the way as he blasted the horn. The court was told that Doyle acted as a “individual whose anger whose anger had completely taken hold of him” as he ploughed further into the crowd, accelerating while individuals were struck by his vehicle. Extent of the Injuries Overall, the ex-marine injured 134 individuals within a mere seven-minute span – with over fifty who needed hospital treatment. A six-month-old boy was “remarkably” uninjured even though he was left on the roadway after the vehicle struck his stroller, the court heard. A supporter, a man named in court, was seen being launched into the air by the car, sustaining a cut on his head, broken ribs and multiple abrasions. Doyle could be heard shouting “for God’s sake move! Get out of my path!” before ploughing further into screaming supporters, including an elderly woman and children who became trapped beneath the vehicle. Scene of Jubilation Turns to Horror Speaking to a full court, the prosecution said approximately a million individuals had attended “what they thought would be a day of joyfulness” marking Liverpool winning their 20th league title. Scenes of jubilation swiftly became “horror”, the prosecutor said, when the driver entered the crowd as he attempted to pick up a friend from the parade route. “Witnesses believed the events unfolding was a terrorist attack.” Brave Intervention Stops Driver As bodies lay on the ground, the vehicle’s path was brought to a halt by an ex-army member, Dan Barr, who entered the back of the car and forced the gearstick into park. Despite this, Doyle continued pressing the gas pedal, according to evidence. In his police interview, Doyle stated he reacted in a “blind panic” because he feared for his life. However, the prosecution argued that the video demonstrated Doyle “just lost his temper in his desire to get to where he wanted to get to”. The prosecutor added: “Consumed by anger, he targeted the crowd and in doing so his intent was to cause serious injury.” Dangerous Driving Prior to Incident Footage showed the driver had been driving dangerously prior to entering downtown, overtaking cars dangerously and running red lights. He ignored road closures and weaved around other vehicles, even emergency service vehicles, as he approached the packed streets. Doyle is expected to receive a jail term of over a decade when he is sentenced on Tuesday.
