The touring camp stated Atkinson had experienced "tightness" and would spend time on the sidelines in order to be assessed "during the day". The visitors have previously lost fast bowlers Mark Wood to a knee injury and another paceman to a side strain on the current trip. Matthew Fisher was brought into the squad as cover for Wood. The seamer had a tough time during the first two matches, managing only three wickets. He was omitted for the Adelaide match, then recalled for the Boxing Day match in the playing XI. Surrey's Atkinson performed better in the fourth Test, claiming a couple of wickets in Australia's first innings, and scoring 28 runs while batting being one of only three English batsmen to get into double digits. After bowling one over at the end of day one, he resumed on Saturday morning and dismissed the nightwatchman edging to the keeper. However, at the end of his spell, he bowled a slower ball to the batsman and promptly felt at his leg. Atkinson was recalled for the fourth Ashes Test following his omission the Adelaide game.
