Oscar-winning actor Catherine Zeta-Jones encountered criticism regarding her looks during an industry event last month.

Females are uniting in defence of acclaimed star Catherine Zeta-Jones after she encountered disparaging remarks online over her looks during a high-profile function.

She appeared at an industry gathering in LA recently where a TikTok interview about her character in the new series of the 'Wednesday' show was overshadowed by discussion concerning her appearance.

Voices of Support

Aged 58, Laura White, labelled the negative reaction "complete nonsense", noting that "men don't have such a timeline that women do".

"Men don't have this sell-by/use-by date imposed on women," argued Laura White.

Writer and commentator aged 50, Sali Hughes, said differently from men, females are unfairly judged for ageing and the actor deserves to be free to appear as she wishes.

Online Reaction

Within the clip, uploaded to Facebook and attracted over 2.5 million views, the actor, who is from Swansea, discussed the pleasure of exploring her character, Morticia Addams, in the latest season.

However a significant number of the numerous remarks zeroed in on her years and were negative towards her appearance.

The negative remarks sparked widespread defence for the actor, featuring a viral video from a social media user which stated: "You bully women for having too much work done and bully them if they avoid enough."

Commenters also spoke up for her, one stating: "It's called growing older naturally and she is gorgeous."

Others described her as "stunning" and "very attractive", while someone else said that "she looks her age - that's called reality."

Challenging Perceptions

Ms White appeared without cosmetics during her appearance to make a statement.

The winner attended at the studio recently with a bare face as a demonstration and to highlight that there is no fixed "blueprint" of how a female in midlife is supposed to look.

Similar to numerous females in her demographic, she stated she "takes care of herself" not to look younger but so she feels "well" and look "vibrant".

"Getting older represents an honour and if we can do it the best we can, that is what is important," she continued.

She contended that males are not judged by equivalent beauty standards, adding "nobody scrutinizes how old certain male celebrities might be - they simply look 'wonderful'."

She said it was one of the reasons behind her participation in the competition for over-45s, in order to demonstrate that women in midlife continue to exist" and "possess it".

A Fundamental Problem

The beauty writer discussing beauty norms
From Wales author and commentator Sali Hughes argues females are consistently and unjustly scrutinized as they grow older.

Sali Hughes, a writer and commentator of Welsh origin, stated that while the actor is "gorgeous" this is "irrelevant", noting she should be able to look in any way she chooses free from her age coming under examination.

Hughes argued the social media vitriol proved that no female is "protected" and that it is unfair for women to endure the "constant narrative" suggesting they are not good enough or of the right age - a situation that is "maddening, regardless of who the victim is".

Questioned on whether men experience equivalent judgment, she answered "no, never", adding women were criticized simply for demonstrating the "nerve" to be present on social media while growing older.

A No-Win Situation

Regardless of the beauty industry emphasizing "longevity", Hughes said females are still criticised whether they aged without intervention or underwent treatments like cosmetic surgery or injectables.

"If you age without intervention, people say you should do more; if you undergo work done, people say you trying too hard," she remarked further.
