The Brazilian forward has now scored 11 goals in every tournament for Nottingham Forest this season.

Match Summary

  • Forest were previously qualified to the play-offs.
  • Bence Otvos own goal gives Nottingham Forest a opening period lead.
  • Igor Jesus' fifth goal in Europe puts the team in command.
  • Forward nets again with a clinical effort in the second half.
  • The midfielder caps a excellent performance with a spot-kick.

Igor Jesus scored twice as the Premier League side rounded off the league phase of the Europa League with a convincing triumph against Ferencvaros at the home stadium.

Forest had already secured a berth in the next qualifying round and entered this game with a slim possibility of reaching the league's elite, although they needed other matches to fall in their favor.

That did not happen but this assured display will give Forest fans confidence that their team can come through the two-legged play-off to reach the last 16.

A Ferencvaros midfielder struck the post with a header inside the first 10 minutes for the away team – coached by former Tottenham striker Robbie Keane – but it was all Forest from that point forward.

Forest broke the deadlock in the early stages when Ryan Yates' cross was turned into his own net by Bence Otvos and added a second four minutes later – Jesus squeezing a shot in at the far post for his tenth strike of the season.

Jesus' 11th arrived early in the second half when he timed a run perfectly to break clear of the defence and then drive an effort beyond the goalkeeper.

The third strike killed off the visitors' aspirations of making a comeback and instead the hosts added a fourth when the impressive McAtee scored from a penalty after a infringement by the unfortunate Bence Otvos inside the box on Dan Ndoye.

Europe's secondary club competition qualifying round draw takes place on Friday, 30 January (midday UK time), where Forest could be drawn against either the Turkish side or Panathinaikos.

"It's more than the result, there was that atmosphere about it. I want these players to do well as a unit, the entire team," said Forest boss Sean Dyche.

"This is another step, but it is a positive one."

Team Breakdown: Jesus Catches Eye as Recent Arrival Watches On

Igor Jesus has been a standout performer for Forest in European competition this term with half of his eleven strikes coming in the Europa League.

His brace also means he has scored three goals in his last two games and the prospect of a challenge for his place in attack could be providing motivation.

Italian forward Lorenzo Lucca was last week brought in temporarily and he was observing this match from the directors' box.

That may well have been on Jesus' thoughts as he was outstanding against the opposition, delivering two superb finishes and generally being a menace to the opposition backline with his speed and movement.

Jesus was not the only one in impressing, with James McAtee producing his finest display in a Forest jersey since signing from Manchester City in the previous transfer window, while the Swiss international also performed well.

These encouraging performances will give the club some fresh hope as they switch focus to pulling further away from the bottom three when they welcome Crystal Palace on the weekend.

"The minimum requirement is a response," added the manager.

"I have always trusted their work ethic or their loyalty or integrity. It is just about displaying your quality.

"James was very good and Dan Ndoye was incredibly lively. Jesus got another two and these are good signs."
