McLaren Racing Blames Competitors for Piastri-Norris Collision

Wheel flies off racing car after contact between team drivers

One tire comes loose from the McLaren of Lando Norris after he collided with fellow driver Oscar Piastri at the beginning of the US GP sprint event.

McLaren F1 team leaders Brown and Stella pointed to rival drivers for the incident between Piastri and Lando Norris at the beginning of the United States Grand Prix sprint event.

The Australian driver, ahead of his teammate in the standings by twenty-two points, crashed into his fellow McLaren driver after making contact with the Nico Hulkenberg.

The incident took both McLaren drivers from the event, along with Aston Martin's Alonso, who was on the inside of the Sauber driver.

Team Executives Express Disappointment Over Crash

Brown, McLaren Racing's CEO, told broadcasters that some of the racing at the start was "inexperienced", remarking: "Obviously Nico hit Oscar and he had no business being where he was."

McLaren F1 team principal Andrea Stella stated: "Our feeling is that we are disappointed that we didn't have the opportunity to compete."

"It is unexpected that some drivers with a lot of experience don't act with justful prudence. Enter the initial turn, ensure you don't damage other drivers and carry on."

McLaren clarified that Stella was pointing to both Hulkenberg and Alonso.

Differing Perspectives on the Crash

Nevertheless, 1996 world champion Hill, providing analysis for a sports broadcast, said he thought the Australian had not shown enough understanding of the dangers of the opening turn of an Formula 1 event when he chose to move inside to try to pass Norris.

The Australian had a better start than Norris and at first challenged on the outer side on the uphill entry to the corner.

However he then cut back in an effort to get a run on his teammate on the exit, only to make contact with the Sauber driver.

Driver Reactions After the Incident

Piastri said: "Not ideal but I did not see what occurred, I attempted to move inside on Lando and we were both quite distant from the corner apex and then were struck and it propelled me into Norris. A shame."

His teammate commented: "I just got hit, right? I did nothing wrong. Behind us things happened and I just got unlucky and was struck because of it. I am unsure. I need to review a bit more carefully. It's more drivers further back just being a bit careless and we are the consequence of that."

Alonso said: "At one point I thought I was in the right place on the inside, but some vehicles came very fast from the outer side changing direction and then I was there in the center."

The Sauber driver, who had earned a season-best fourth place, said: "Big frustrations. All the strong performance from yesterday in the bin. Just chaotic."

"Piastri steered inward pretty aggressively trying to get the undercut and exit of the first corner but I can't just disappear."

"I had Alonso challenge on the inner side and I was unable to see him any more. I wanted to leave space for him and then Piastri turned in and the contact was inevitable."

Post-Crash and Team Response

McLaren will analyze the incident with their drivers but only after the race weekend. Both vehicles needed significant repairs before grand prix qualifying at 22:00 BST on Saturday.

Stella said: "In general disappointed but we take it on the chin, we are now focusing on fixing the vehicles, there is a lot to do and then we will resume the event from there."

"We are in a competitive place from our competitiveness point of view so I hope we have the opportunity to race, compete fairly and capitalise on our capabilities."

"Championship points are the most important thing, I prefer not to talk about mal-intent, just prudence. A bit more care would be good for all involved."

Standings Impact

The sprint event was won by Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who gained ground on both McLaren drivers in the championship - he is now 55 points behind Piastri and thirty-three behind of the Briton.

Stella said: "The consequence is what the numbers says - we missed out on eight points with both drivers, but we concentrate on ourselves. We have a highly capable car and two strong racers. We look forward to just some standard competition."

Verstappen said he was approaching the championship one event at a time.
