What We Know Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Shooting

A minimum of 16 lives were killed and more than 40 were hurt when assailants fired on a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian authorities have labeled a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities remains at 16, including one of the alleged attackers. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were taken to medical facilities.

The deceased have not yet been officially identified, but authorities state their ages range from 10 and 87 years old.

Listed are the individuals who have been identified at this time.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he was the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the events leading up to the shooting, explaining they were standing when the gunfire started. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced immense hardship in their childhood. They had later relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Publicly, a senior official expressed that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the statement continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was also killed in the incident, according to reports citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospitals, many remain under care, with several in a critical state. Those hurt include two police officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He said he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
